Run the Trails of Clarens • Conquer the Titanic

The Titanic Challenge Trail Run

Each year, runners gather in the Eastern Free State for the Titanic Challenge Trail Run. Set in the mountains around Clarens, the event brings together trail running, community, and conservation.

What started as a local initiative has grown into one of South Africa’s fastest-growing trail events. It’s more than a race — it’s a way to support the land, the people who care for it, and the trails that make this area special.

The Event

The Titanic Challenge is a one-day trail run through mountain trails, farmland, and protected natural areas around Clarens. The routes are well marked and supported, with a strong focus on safety and good organisation.

Distances include 5 km, 10 km, 21 km, 35 km, and 50 km, with options for experienced trail runners and those new to the sport. Longer distances include sections across private game and livestock farms, with over 30 km of route only accessible on race day.

Established in 2022, the event has become a regular feature on the South African trail running calendar, known for its varied routes, strong local support, and meaningful cause.

NOTE: No dogs are allowed, as parts of the route pass through private and protected areas.

Run for a Cause

The event is hosted by the Clarens Village Conservancy, with all funds going toward the protection and upkeep of the Clarens Nature Reserve.

Your entry helps support:
Conservation of the nature reserve and its biodiversity
Employment through the ranger programme and local job creation
Education via environmental programmes for schools and community groups
